8 Tips for a Happy, Healthy Marriage

A healthy marriage takes work, but it’s possible to achieve. Just like good nutrition and regular exercise can help keep your body healthy, there are things you can do for your marriage. Here are 8 tips to strengthen your marriage.

Spend Time Together

Married couples, especially ones with children, need alone time together to grow strong. Many couples feel the strain when it’s been weeks since getting time together. Forget the “quality vs. quantity time” discussion. Healthy marriages need both.

Plan regular date nights and weekend getaways. Work hard to guard your date nights. And strategize to build in more weekend getaways.

Honor & Respect Each Other

Keep your heart postured to honor and respect each other. When a couple fails to honor and respect one another, they often slip into negative habits. Research shows that criticism and put-downs quickly damage a relationship. Treat each other the way you want to be treated (Luke 6:31).

Explore Intimacy

Intimacy in marriage will help you grow closer together. But it doesn’t have to do with sexuality only. There’s also emotional intimacy. Create space in your marriage for a “state-of-the-union” where you can both share your thoughts and emotions without feeling judged or ridiculed.

Cultivate a Spiritual Connection

Spiritually connecting is as important as connecting emotionally and physically. When couples strengthen all three areas of intimacy, they become a triple-braided cord that’s not easily broken

Many of us focus on growing our personal relationship with Jesus. And that’s good. But we can’t forget to grow in Christ together too. He is the cornerstone.

When we’re at different levels of spiritual maturity, having a shared spiritual relationship is challenging. 2 Peter 3:18 says, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” So we must find ways to help us grow more like Jesus together.

Improve Communication Skills

Communication skills are essential for a healthy marriage. That means talking and listening well! There’s a difference between listening and hearing.

Practice. Learn to ask and listen. And don’t assume you know what your spouse is thinking or feeling.

Forgive Each Other

Learn how to forgive quickly. Offense, hurt, or frustration with each other is bound to happen. You will both make mistakes. Build a culture of forgiveness in your marriage. It will strengthen your marriage.

Look for the Best in Each Other

In the beginning, you focused on the positive qualities of each other. And you fell in love. But over time, your view of your partner may have changed. Maybe what you saw as them being kind at first you now see as passive.

Give each other the benefit of the doubt and resist becoming critical. Create a list of what you love about your husband or wife. Remind yourself often. It will help you remain thankful and even fall in love all over again.

Learn to Negotiate Conflict

Conflict is a normal part of any relationship. But, when it increases and becomes intense, it can become emotionally and sometimes physically unsafe. Working through conflict begins with understanding the issues and discussing them. Find good resources or counseling services if you struggle in this area to help you navigate conflict safely and healthily.
