If you’re like most couples, you enter into marriage with high hopes and great expectations. But somewhere along the way, those dreams can turn into survival mode as you try to make it through daily life. If that’s where you are, take heart! It is possible to move from surviving to thriving in marriage.

4 Principles to Thrive in Your Relationship

Here are four biblical principles that can help get you there.

1. Develop a servant’s heart.

Developing a servant’s heart is one of the quickest ways to move from surviving to thriving. When we focus on meeting our needs first, getting caught up in a “me first” mentality is easy. But when we choose instead to serve our spouse and put their needs above our own, we create an environment of love and respect in which both husband and wife can thrive.

2. Make time for each other.

In today’s busy world, letting work and other commitments consume our time and energy is easy. But if we’re not careful, that can lead to neglecting our marriage relationship. Make time for each other every day, even just a few minutes before bedtime, to talk about your day or pray together. Those daily check-ins will go a long way toward keeping your connection strong.

3. Communicate openly and honestly.

Oftentimes, problems in our marriage relationship can be traced back to poor communication. If we’re not honest with each other about what’s going on in our lives, it creates an environment of mistrust. Learn to communicate openly and honestly with your spouse about the good and the bad, and you’ll lay the foundation for a thriving relationship built on mutual respect.

4. Seek guidance from God.

Finally, remember that God is the ultimate source of wisdom regarding marriage. As you seek His guidance for your relationship, He will provide the wisdom and direction to move from surviving to thriving.  Ask Him daily to help build the marriage He intends for you to have!
